About Faculty of Arts and Creative Media

The Faculty of Arts & Creative Media (FACM) offers a variety of academic programmes in the fields of traditional arts such as fine arts, as well as being contemporary in the fields of the so called modern technology-based arts such as animation, screen arts and the hybrid of the two, i.e. visual arts. The faculty realises the applications of arts are wide, emerging and in the contemporary era of fast changing technology, visual cues are playing prominent roles in areas of communication, marketing and entertainment.

Hence, it has an obligation to fulfil the local and national demand of skilled human talents required by the various industries, as well as to play a key role in boosting the development of the ever emerging creative industry in Sabah, thereby enhancing further Sabah’s position as one of the key creative hub in Malaysia. Although relatively young, the faculty recognises the huge role it, as well as its students, would have to play as stewards of conservation and preservation, especially given Sabah’s unique natural environment, culture, ethnicity and heritage.

Dean Message

As Sabah Foundation is acknowledged as one of the leading advocates of conservation in the world and University College Sabah Foundation has an all-important green identity, the Faculty of Arts & Creative Media, too, is committed in towards being green by:

Preserving the identity and promoting the role of artistic communication as an important medium for value creation.

This role specifically refers to the challenging efforts of conserving the natural habitats of Sabah, especially taking into consideration the State and its surrounding regions are still caught in the cross-road of modernisation. There exists many indigenous assets, i.e. arts, crafts, talents, cultures and traditional knowledge and practices, some of which are yet to be discovered or documented. All these deserve to be treasured for the future generations.

Hence, the faculty has an important duty to ensure that the rich heritage is preserved, while at the same time, their tangible and intangible values are enhanced to ensure sustainability.

The Brundtland Commission 1987 Report defines sustainable development as encompassing the meeting of our present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. All its three key components – environmental conservation, social responsibility, and economic development, are relevant to UCSF because it believes that Sabah’s future generations need to be confident of their own identities and their origins because today’s technology and its impact on the contemporary lifestyle has the power to blur the present tribes and their ancestral roots.

Apart from the mission of safe-guarding this rich tradition, culture and lifestyle, which is line with being strong advocates of green value-system, we believe this preservation agenda must be done in both its traditional forms as well as in the more contemporary digital formats. As a result, the programmes of the faculty are designed to fulfil both UCSF’s mission and drive the sunrise creative industry with purpose and rich meanings.
