Sea Turtles in Troubled Waters

UCSF Green Talk Series: “Sea Turtles in Troubled Waters”
by Associate Prof. Dr. Juanita Joseph

About the Event

The Centre for Research and Innovation Management (CRIM) has organized a talk on “Sea Turtles in Troubled Waters” as part of the Green Talk Series. The series is part of UCSF’s green initiatives toward conservation and sustainability.

It was delivered by Associate Prof. Dr. Juanita Joseph, a senior lecturer from Borneo Marine Research Institute (BMRI), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS). Her presentation aims to highlight the importance of sea turtles to the ecosystem, conservation status of sea turtles in Malaysia and threats to its survival.

During the talk, Dr. Juanita shares interesting facts on sea turtles and one of it is the number of sea turtle species that can be found in Malaysia in which out of seven species of sea turtles in the world, four of its species are in Malaysia.

However, due to increasing threats caused by humans such as continuous over-exploitation of eggs and adults, habitat loss, environmental degradation, direct human disturbances and pollution had driven these turtles to extinction.

The threats to sea turtles are too big to overcome; however, some things can be changed. One of these is public awareness and support for the sea turtle conservation initiatives.
