The Pala’uh is a minority group categorized under the Bajau Laut or Sama Dilaut communities.  Generally, they are referred as the sea gypsies due to their transitory way of life at sea. The Pala’uh tend to move from island to island to fish and trade.  Living within the TMMP, they are closely associated with the ecology of the sea that influenced their seafaring and maritime knowledge which have been passed on through generation.  Their life is synonymous to the sea; their livelihood, worldview, values, custom and beliefs are closely oriented toward the sea.

Based on initial findings, the majority are not aware that the study area has been gazetted as a Marine Park. However, they have heard about TMMP but is still unaware of the conservation measures which will be imposed within the TMMP area.
